What is the Barton Reading & Spelling System?

The Barton Reading & Spelling System has been helping students since 1998. Based on the Orton-Gillingham model which is scientifically proven to help with dyslexia and related learning disabilities, the Barton Reading & Spelling System is a multi-sensory, direct, structured, and sequential program.

Among the most important concepts taught are:

Phonemic Awareness

Phonemic awareness is achieved when we are able to hear, identify and manipulate phonemes -- which are the smallest basic units of speech sound by which words and sentences are represented.

Phoneme/Grapheme Correspondence

The student learns which sounds are represented by which letters and then how to blend the letters into words.

The Six Types of Syllables

There are six types of syllables in the English language. This helps students identify each syllable and translate that into spelling and pronunciation.

Probabilities and Rules

Teaching students the probabilities and rules within the English language provides direction and guidelines as to how words can be spelled and sound similar.

Roots and Affixes, as well as Morphology

These are taught to the student in order to expand their vocabulary and increase their ability to comprehend and spell words that are unfamiliar to them.

Each lesson includes these six teaching strategies:

  • Simultaneous Multisensory Instruction

  • Instruction and Practice

  • Direct and Explicit Instruction

  • Systematic and Cumulative Practice

  • Synthetic and Analytic Practice

  • Diagnostic Teaching
